Corporate & Social Responsibility
The Sovereign Reversions group is committed to high ethical standards in all its dealings. We are particularly conscious of our responsibilities in our relationships with elderly people.
The success of any business whose customers are a vulnerable section of the community relies heavily on being able to demonstrate consistently high standards in all dealings.
Dealings with customers
No potential customers are offered a Home & Capital equity release plan until they have received professional advice, either through our regulated advisory business or through a qualified independent financial intermediary. We believe the delivery of appropriate advice is critical. In the case of equity release, it is important that homeowners are advised on all the options available and not pressurised to take out an equity release plan.
Building a long term relationship of trust with elderly homeowners is an essential element in managing equity release plans. We adopt the same standards of customer care whether the plan is regulated or not.
Setting standards within the industry
Home & Capital was a founder member of Safe Home Income Plans ("SHIP"), a voluntary body established by the industry in 1991 to set standards of consumer protection. As members of SHIP, we subscribe to its Code of Practice in our products and dealings. We have been at the forefront of developing industry standards and maintain an active role in setting standards.
- Our Chief Executive, Graeme Marshall, represented Home & Capital on the Board of SHIP for eight years from 1999, including chairing the Home Reversions Board and serving on various working parties.
- Our current representative, Simon Little, himself a director of SHIP since 2005, served on its management board for most of the 2008/2009 financial year.
- Nigel Hare-Scott, who is responsible for our advisory activities, has been a member of the committee of the Skills Council responsible for drawing up the syllabus for the equity release exams.
